Volvo’s first model to be exported in any great numbers was the PV444 of 1947. When the time came to replace it, in 1958, Volvo simply modified the curvaceous and sturdy bodyshell slightly – with bigger front and rear windows – and dubbed the new model the PV544 (to signify that this ‘personvagn’ could now seat four instead of five). Two engines were used; a 1583cc unit and, from 1960, a 1778cc one. Sport models boasted twin carburettors and extra levels of equipment. The PV was meant to be superseded by the 120 but lasted seven years alongside it.
