  • 1971 Volvo 1800E

    POA POA

This attractive Volvo 1800's life began in 1971 and was manufactured as an E model with Bosche fuel injection. In 1998, an extensive restoration began involving major bodywork repairs and mechanical works. During these works, completed circa 1999, the fuel injection system was replaced with twin SU carburetors and there is evidence that an un-leaded cylinder head conversion was carried out; all of these works being detailed with invoices and photographs with many invoices from one of the UKs leading Volvo specialists. In May 2011, the current owner purchased the Volvo and has used it on a regular basis since. On inspection, it may be seen that it is in good order throughout; the coachwork still attractive in red and testament to the quality of the works carried out nearly 20 years ago. The interior is inviting and also in good order. A separate file of invoices from its current ownership shows that this 1800E has been well cared for and maintained. Several beneficial upgrades include a leak-free full-folding Webasto sunroof that is in very good condition allowing the full benefit when the sun shines, a 123 electronic ignition, upgraded engine and gearbox mountings and a period radi

If an automobile ever represented more than met the eye it was the Volvo P1800. The unassuming P1800 was Volvo’s sports car, produced from 1961-1972, combining simple attractive styling and good performance with Volvo reliability.  The P1800 was developed out-of-house, led by Volvo engineering consultant Helmer Petterson with the purpose of gaining entry into new markets with Italian styling and promised performance.  The design was credited to Italian coachbuilder Frua – but was in-fact drawn by Petterson’s son, Pelle Pettersen, who later gained fame as one of Sweden’s greatest yacht designers and an America’s Cup skipper guiding two Swedish challengers. The P1800 prototype was first shown in 1957 but took four long years to reach production, before British sports car maker Jensen began building the P1800 for Volvo in 1961. Examples of the P1800 have been driven a million miles and more. The P1800 originated with a 1.8-Liter in-line four-cylinder engine producing 100 hp mated with a 4-speed manual transmission, in a sturdy 96.5 in wheelbase chassis.  The coupe was the only body style offered prior to 1972 and quickly found an enthusiastic following.  Popularity probably also came from the regular appearance of the white P1800 coupe driven by Roger Moore in the popular British television series “The Saint”.  The P1800 might have found an even greater following, if not for the fact that the 1961 introduction came on top of the Jaguar XK-E –priced only slightly less than the E-Type. Ongoing development of the P1800 ultimately led to a larger 130 hp 1,986 cc B20E engine with a revised camshaft, Bosch electronic fuel injection and four-wheel disc brakes.  Top speed was quoted at 118 mph (190 kph). The car on offer is a fabulous example of this final iteration of the classic coupe.  Sold new in Hollywood California, this longtime California and Arizona car is an amazing original car that has never had, nor needed a restoration.  The previous owner looked long and hard for the right example, to join the multiple Gullwings, Porsches and similar automobiles in his collection, and owned this car simply because he enjoyed it!  This is an honest, clean, well- detailed automobile without being fussy, which can be enjoyed for many, many more years.  Fastidiously maintained throughout its lifetime, this car is one of the best P1800s we have ever seen. In addition to the B20 fuel injected engine this car is equipped with a 4-speed overdrive transmission, and was equipped when new with factory AC, however the compressor is not installed on the car at this time.  The car drives wonderfully, steers and stops straight and shows good power, and is a delight to drive.  The car presents itself as a restored car, with gorgeous paint and chrome, and excellent panel fit.  The seats are beautifully finished in leather, not vinyl, the dashboard is in very good condition showing no cracks as these cars are prone to, and the gauges are all clear.  The front and rear seats and door panels are also in fabulous condition, with good carpet that may be original and has been well maintained.  Property provided with the sale includes a plastic sleeve with original factory material and a new instruction book, owner ID card, extensive service receipts dating from 1986 and including those showing a head rebuild and bottom end refreshening in 2002, and a binder filled with restoration and parts receipts since 2013.  This is truly a superb late production Volvo P1800 with all of the benefits of ongoing development that can be owned and driven enthusiastically, ready for its next caretaker.

  • 1972 Volvo 1800ES Station Wagon

    $32,500(£26,562.25) $32,500(£26,562.25)

The 1800 Coupe was by far the prettiest car Volvo had ever sold, but by the second half of the 1960s many believed that its styling was starting to look dated. The always methodical Volvo settled on a revision rather than a complete redesign of their performance model, and were keen on a practical hatchback rear. A P1800S coupe was then sent to Carrozzeria Coggiola, the firm established by ex-Ghia designer Sergio Coggiola. By late 1968, he had finished an attractive prototype three-door hatchback, and by 1972 the 1800 ES was introduced for sale. Mechanically, the ES was identical to the E it replaced, including the B20 engine, a 1986 cc Bosch fuel-injected straight-four that made 135 horsepower. Overall, the ES was very well received, especially in the important US market, where journalists praised the car’s practicality and loved the elegant rear glass and clever hatch. Volvo cleverly advertised it as “sort of a flying trunk”, and from 1972 it was the only body style offered for their gorgeous 1800. A little over 8,000 P1800ES’s were built and, just like the coupe versions, they make fantastic vintage automobiles that are rugged and reliable in addition to being fun to drive and great to look at. This 1972 Volvo 1800 ES is a beautiful California car finished in metallic light blue with a black interior. It also features sport wheels, blackwall radial tires and a four-speed manual gearbox and comes with its full set of original manuals. The upholstery, carpets, door panels and engine bay are all fantastic and like new, and the chrome has mostly been replated. The dash, which in these cars is prone to start to crack and disintegrate early, has been replaced and is very pretty. The show quality paint is also exquisite. Since Volvo 1800s in general are so durable and affordable, many are in mostly original, sometimes worn out condition, and few have been given anywhere near the level of treatment that this one has. Straight, sound and beautiful, it is ready for its next owner to enjoy the longevity and pleasurable motoring that these Volvos are so famous for.

Power assisted brakes on a ‘Triangle’ split dual-circuit features discs all round to ensure positive stopping power for such a substantial vehicle. HISTORY FILE The history file accompanying this Volvo 144 Grand Luxe is simply colossal, and only very rarely does a vehicle come with quite so much paperwork! Registered new on 16th May 1973 by Volvo Main Dealers Clarke Bros. Services in Peterborough, this example has been local to KGF Classic Cars its entire life! The previous keeper, Mr Robin Smith, has cherished this example since purchasing it in November 1981. A devoted member of The Volvo Owners Club, paperwork pertaining to club membership is extensive in the history file along with a huge collection of local district Classic Car Club rosettes. The huge history file is organised to display countless invoices and receipts, largely from Volvo Main Dealers, spanning the vehicles early days right up to present to leave in no doubt the good upkeep this car has enjoyed. The original vehicle handbook and items such as a period AA membership pack have been kept and make interesting reading. Two sets of keys with Volvo fobs and even an AA Members Box Key complete the history file. Mr Smith’s decision to part with his pride and joy was difficult and was mainly based on recent lack of use but one which allows the next owner to benefit and enjoy his years of dedication for this classic executive Volvo. A car for the true and most discerning Volvo enthusiast. Tax exempt and HPI Clear.
