With the Beetle so easy to put different bodies on – after all, this was how Porsche started out – it was almost inevitable that Volkswagen would come up with a sportscar. Actually, it was coachbuilder Karmann which had the idea and VW jumped at the chance when it saw the pretty coupé body that Ghia designed. The public liked it too, and this sleeker Beetle sold well. However, it was a sheep in wolf’s clothing, for its underpinnings were pure Beetle, with anemic performance. The original 1192cc engine was increased in stages up to 1584cc by 1974.
