The Triumph TR4 was introduced in 1961 and succeeded the TR2 and TR3. It was based on the chassis and drivetrain of the previous TR sports cars, but with a modern Michelotti styled body. 40,253 cars were built during production years. The TR4 proved very successful and continued the rugged, "hairy-chested" image that the previous TRs had enjoyed. The new TR4 body style did away with the classical cutaway door design of the previous TRs to allow for wind-down (roll-up) windows (in place of less convenient side-curtains), and the angular rear allowed a boot (trunk) with considerable capacity for a sports car. In 1965, the TR4A with IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) superseded the TR4. Apart from the rear suspension, which used trailing arms and a differential bolted to the redesigned chassis frame and a number of small styling changes and refinements, the two models appear nearly identical. This 1964 Triumph TR4 was imported from California and complete rebuild in accordance with FIA regulations. The street legal Triumph is has two Weber 45DCOE carburettors, oil cooler, OMP race seats, a certified ATL safety tank of 80 litres with 2 electric fuel pumps, Moss close ratio gearbox, a Tran-X slip differential, a safety roll bar, lap timer and aluminium 15 "Minilite wheels. The car is very competitive and has taken part in the Dutch championship for Historic touring cars and the MG-Triumph competition. With 175 HP under the bonnet it’s very quick! An increasingly rare find being as it is an early UK delivered TR4 with Surrey Top. Remember, some 90% of Triumph production in this period was destined for an overseas market so a UK car has a certain cache. Being an early car, it also still retains its beautifully patinated TR3a style seats, which handily can also accommodate a taller driver. Indeed, the previous owner to us of some 12 years was some 6’ 4” himself and fitted comfortably. We’re not claiming this car to be a concours contender as it stands, though little effort from an enthusiastic owner would certainly enhance its chances. Instead, with a significant drought of good sub-£30,000 classic sportscars we’re pleased to offer this to someone who will enjoy using it, rather than just polishing it. Supplied through F. Guyver & Sons Limited of Stratford Upon Avon in 1962 its original colours were Spa White with Black leather interior. Options included heater, windscreen washer, hard-top, sun visors, Michelin X tyres and overdrive. In 2011/12 this car was stripped to be repainted. At the same time, four original wings sourced from the USA were married to the car, and the sills replaced. A full respray and re-chroming of the brightwork also took place as documented by photographs and a host of receipts. Later, in 2015, the engine head was rebuilt too. Our car further benefits from a Phoenix exhaust and manifold, electric ignition and Petronix Flame Thrower coil. A known car amongst the TR Register, ‘HFO 754’ was featured many times in the Rimmer Bros catalogue. Currently undergoing final preparation, the intention is to get the car back to looking as it did in period, with steel wheels, chrome hub caps and perhaps devoid of the Lucas fog lamps, albeit, they’re bloomin’ handy for a late run back from the pub!
ANU 407A was built on the 5th November 1963 and finished in Triumph Racing Green with Black trim and hood. The TR was shipped from King George Dock, Kingston upon Hull aboard the vessel 'Bataan' and was then supplied new by Standard Triumph Motor Company Inc, San Francisco, California, USA. This genuine California car was supplied new with overdrive, leather seats, wood veneered facia, wire wheels and still retains its correct original engine is therefore a matching numbers car. The TR4 came over to the UK in 1994 and was comprehensively restored in left hand drive format. We, as Grundy Mack Classic Cars sold the car in 1998 and reported that the car had a recent bottom end engine rebuild. We also commented on the car having excellent paintwork, bodywork and high standard of upholstery. The TR was converted to right hand drive format before coming back to us in 2001 when we sold it to long term regular customer in Driffield who owned the car for sixteen years. The Triumph comes with a comprehensive file of invoices dating back to 1995 and as a result we have evidence to show how well maintained this car has been. Included in the restoration process, the vehicle was stripped to bare metal, metal finished, leaded, all body parts and chrome were fitted to the car, it was prepared for primer, sealer, paint, base, clear coat, color sanded and buffed to a fabulous finish. All systems have been gone through and the engine was rebuilt back to factory specifications. The pushrod Standard inline-four engine, was designed for use by Standard-Triumph in Triumph cars, but was also provided to Ferguson for use as tractor engines. The standard engine produced 105 bhp (78 kW) paired with 4 speed full synchromesh manual gearbox and overdrive as an option. The TR4 had a number of racing successes in America. Perhaps the greatest racing victory for the TR4 was at Daytona, where a Californian engineer Kas Kastner prepare car driven by Charlie Gates won the 1965 SCCA D Modified Championship against Ferraris and other prepared race car exotics.
