Although the Tercel was Europe’s first FWD Toyota, it was the 1983 Corolla E80 that held the honour of being the first popular front-driver here. It was conservatively styled, and remains pretty forgettable today, but unfairly so if the excellence of the GT is anything to go by. It’s revvy and responsive, handles well, and most importantly for any ‘80s hot-shoe, it was considerably quicker than the market-leading Ford Escort XR3i. You’ll struggle to find one in rust-free condition, but if you do, the chances are it’ll not be cheap – buyers have cottoned on.
