Bonhams is set to offer the 1984 Toleman-Hart TG184, the car driven by Ayrton Senna in his first Monaco GP.
The car in which Ayrton Senna first raced at the Monaco Grand Prix, 1984 Toleman-Hart TG184, is to be offered by Bonhams at the 2018 Monaco Sale in Monte Carlo on 11 May at Villa La Vigie.
Even casual Formula 1 fans will be able to recount the story behind this Toleman, which was raced by Senna in the 1984 season. During one of the wettest Monaco races ever, the young driver ruffled a few feathers when he started to hunt down Alain Prost’s leading McLaren at a rate of three seconds per lap. To many, it is the car and race responsible for starting the long-fought Senna and Prost rivalry.
Powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, putting out 600bhp, the Toleman-Hart TG184 was designed by Rory Byrne and Pat Symonds. The ‘84 Monaco GP just happened to be the car’s second outing, with Senna’s wet weather talent helping to give the car its first significant result of the season.
Mark Osborne, Global Head of Motorsport at Bonhams, commented: ‘The Senna-Prost joust of the late 1980s and early 1990s was one of the greatest sporting rivalries of all time, with two great champions providing F1 fans with some of the most eye-popping and spectacular racing ever witnessed. The spark that ignited this fierce competition can be traced back almost 35 years to the 1984 edition of the Monaco Grand Prix, and the politically charged decision to throw out the red flag when it was clear that the young Brazilian was about to ruffle some feathers! We are delighted to present the very car - the 1984 Toleman-Hart TG184 - that triggered this great rivalry, and which provided the opening chapter for Ayrton Senna's remarkable and record-breaking story at the Monaco Grand Prix.’
