Shelby American has announced a run of Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe’s to celebrate beating Ferrari to the FIA Sports Car Championship 50 years ago.

The car has been commissioned by Shelby themselves, and follows on from the limited-run 50th anniversary edition Shelby Cobra revealed earlier this year.

Just 50 of the Coupe’s will be built, available with either an aluminium or fibreglass body, with V8s measuring 4.7, 5.0 and 7.0 litres all on offer. It was the 4.7 litre block that helped Shelby conquer Ferrari at Le Mans in 1965, producing 330bhp back then as it promises to do so (or more) half a century later.

The 1965 FIA Sports Car Championship was a straight fight between Enzo Ferrari’s 275 P2s, 250 LMs and 330 P2s, and Carroll Shelby’s Daytona Coupe. Although the spoils from Le Mans returned to Italy, the series title belonged to Shelby. To this day, Carroll’s team are the only American outfit to ever have lifted the title.

In aluminium the car commands $349,995, although the fibreglass versions start at $179,995. Compared to the ‘60s editions, which are nothing short of $7,000,000, the car is a bargain, although lucky buyers will have to invest in the drivetrain separately, the car remains a bargain and a fabulous reminder of one of the greatest Sport cars ever to hit the track.
