1956-1967 RENAULT Dauphine specifications

The 4CV lived on in the stylish Dauphine. Born in 1956, this was a development of the 4CV with bigger rear-engine, chassis and bodywork. It sold almost twice as many (2,120,000) as the car which it grew out of. Intriguing features were the Ferlec transmission – giving finger-touch changes – and Aerostable semi-pneumatic variable suspension, plus disc brakes on all four wheels from 1964. The 37-40bhp Gordini (add 50% to prices) and the 49bhp 1093cc Rallye (not imported to UK) gave Mini Cooper-esque performance. The latter even had natty racing stripes!
