The Renault 5 GT Turbo was one of the best hot hatches to come out of the 1980s


When the Gordini Turbo was phased out in 1984 with the arrival of the 'Supercinq', Renault had to up the ante. The GT Turbo used the same basic engine as the Gordini, but a Garrett T2 turbocharger and a few other induction system modifications raised the power to 115bhp, and again to 118bhp in 1987. This power figure on its own isn’t that impressive, but the Renault 5 tipped the scales at only 820kg, giving the tiny hot hatch truly staggering acceleration – not to mention fun, rear inside wheel-lifting handling.
