Porsche 997: Buying guide and review (2004-2012) Classic and Performance Car
Porsche 997 Porsche 997 Porsche 997 Porsche 997 Porsche 997 Porsche 997 Porsche 997 Porsche 997 Porsche 997
Released in 2004, the Porsche 997 Carrera was a subtle evolution of its predecessor. It saw a welcome return to the more traditional oval headlights, while refinement was much improved. As always with a new 911, the usual motoring journalist complaints of less feedback and feel than the previous generation were rife, but these things are relative. Compared to the competitors (as well as later 911s!) the 997 is as alive and interactive as most drivers could want from a modern sports car.

Selling in far greater numbers than the more specialised 911 variants such as the GT3 and Turbo, our focus will be on the ‘bread and butter’ Carrera range. These cars are a great entry point into 911 ownership, so read on to see what to look out for when considering one of these iconic sports cars.

Which Porsche 997 to buy?

Available with either a 325bhp 3.6-litre which was a carry-over from the 996 and a newly developed 355bhp 3.8-litre power unit, the Carrera range could be had in either coupe, convertible or targa body styles. Four-wheel drive was introduced later in 2004. Initial transmission options were an all-new six-speed manual or the familiar Tiptronic auto. Other than the additional power, the S versions also came standard with Porsche’s new PASM stability management system. The interior was all-new, the design now more closely linked to earlier air-cooled Porsches.

Other than some minor changes, the range received its next big update in 2009. This saw the introduction of new direct injection engines, adding power and removing the troublesome IMS shaft of earlier engines. The sporty PDK transmission replaced the ageing Tiptronic unit, and updates to the lights and interior finishes were carried out. In true Porsche tradition, options were plentiful and pricey, so few cars were highly-specced. Popular items were the upgraded Bose sound system, sports seats and rear wiper. Those intending to visit the track should look out for cars equipped with the sport chassis (which included an LSD), sports chrono pack and switchable sport exhaust system. The X51 power kit was very pricey and added around 25bhp to Carrera S models, and makes a small but noticeable difference.

The 399bhp 3.8-litre Carrera GTS was introduced in 2011, featuring the wider four-wheel drive bodyshell. It could be had in coupe and convertible versions. The limited edition 911 Speedster using the same engine arrived during the same year, while the retro-inspired Sport Classic was built in very limited numbers the year before and is very valuable today.

If you’re looking for pure driving enjoyment, a manual or PDK Gen II Carrera or Carrera S in two-wheel drive spec is a great choice. Those wanting to enjoy their 911 at more sedate speeds can find happiness in a convertible model. Tiptronic gearboxes are more laid back and available for less money. Four-wheel drive versions offer a bit more grip in the wet without sacrificing driving feel. Targas give the cabin a more airy feel, especially in the back, but do not feature the cool retracting roof of the newer 991 models.

Common problems

• Intermediate Shaft bearings have failed on a number of earlier cars although it is nowhere near as bad as an internet search would have you believe. Post-2005 models have upgraded bearings and Gen 2 cars got rid of the IMS shaft completely.

• The Rear main seal (RMS) can also drip oil and can generally be attended to when the clutch needs doing as the gearbox needs removing to get to the seal.

• Bore scoring is something that affects a small percentage of Gen 1 cars (especially S models) and an oily deposit on the left side exhaust pipe and/or ticking during idling can indicate an issue. Bore scopes are the only sure way to know and should be factored into any Gen 1 purchase price.

• Radiators mounted behind the front bumpers can accumulate leaves and road grime and can get blocked or develop small leaks leading to overheating issues.

• Front bushes on the suspension arms can wear out and if this is found in combination with excessive tyre wear on the outside edge and warped brake discs, the car will most likely have been extensively tracked.

• Manual gearboxes are robust as are both the Tiptronic and PDK units. Some specialists recommend oil changes whenever the clutch needs changing which is every 50,000miles or so.

• A number of recalls were issued affecting exhaust weld seams, steering systems and parking brake functionality. These should all have been attended to but are worth following up on just in case.

Model history

2004: The second water cooled 911, the Porsche 997 is launched. 325bhp 3.6-litre Carrera and 355bhp 3.8-litre Carrera S models available with either six-speed manual or Tiptronic transmission options. Convertible body style added mid-year. Four-wheel drive model introduced in November
2009: Entire range face-lifted, LED taillights, new paint schemes, interior trim and alloys. Direct injection engines mean no more IMS and an additional 25bhp to both models. Dual clutch PDK replaces Tiptronic gearbox
2010: Sport Classic special edition built (250 in total) with 399bhp and styling cues from the 1973 Carrera RS
2011: Carrera GTS with 399bhp introduced. Speedster with GTS spec engine built in very limited numbers – 356 in total.
2012: New 991 model gradually phases out 997 range.

Summary and prices

The majority of cars out there are the more powerful S models with either Tiptronic or PDK transmissions. Four-wheel drive was also very popular, and prices don’t vary much between specs except for the convertibles which are generally a few thousand more than the Targas and coupes.

With Gen 1 997 models nearing the bottom of their price curve now is the time to get buying. Non-S 3.6-litre models have a better reliability record and at £18,000 for a 2004/5 Carrera 2, are very tempting. For an extra £6000, 2007 Carrera S models and low mileage Carrera Convertibles can be had.

If you have £32,000 to spend then 2009 Gen 2 models are within reach. Budget on double that figure for a neat GTS. For peace of mind, full service histories are imperative and a pre-purchase inspection by a specialist is highly recommended.

    POA POA

Philip Raby Porsche Porsche Sales and Service Any Porsche 997 Turbo is a treat, and this one is no exception. It’s a stunning low-mileage example, finished in rare GT Silver Metallic, which is a deeper, richer shade than the more usual Arctic Silver. It looks wonderful! The interior is finished in Natural Grey Leather, which is a dark, almost black, shade. The cabin is well-specified with hard-back fully-electric Adaptive Sports seats with memory and heating, plus Sport Chrono Pack Plus, PCM sat-nav, Bose sound pack, cruise control, sunroof, multifunction steering wheel and Alcantara headlining. Other options include rear Park Assist, Bi-Xenon headlamps, PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management), Porsche VTS tracking system, and much more. Sport Chrono Pack Plus is a must-have option for 997 Turbos. It includes a dash-top chronometer, plus sophisticated timing via the PCM screen. Most importantly, it adds a Sports button to the dash. When pressed, this firms up the suspension, gives a faster throttle response, and reprogrammes the Tiptronic transmission to hold lower gears longer, all of which combines to give an even more exciting driving experience. The Porsche comes with a wel

    £54,995 £54,995

The understated 911 Turbo makes supercars look faintly ludicrous. The 911 is like any other Porsche, easy to get in and out of, well built, simple to park and comfortable. What separates it from the norm is the mighty power from its twin turbocharged flat six. From behind the wheel it feels like any other 911, only the 'Turbo' script on the dials give the game away. That and the pressure on your ribcage as 480bhp does its best to invert you. After a slight pause for breath at just over 2000rpm the twin turbos spool up and the 911 turns violent. Although the figures provide succinct proof of its power, there is one value in particular that makes a 911 Turbo what it is: constancy. Of course, much has changed in the course of seven generations, but the basic principle remains the same. This one owner, much sought after manual gearbox example comes in GT Silver with black leather interior. Long list of specification include Spoort Chrono Package Turbo, BOSE sound system, leather dashboard, Aluminum (painted) rear centre console, PCM satellite navigation, tilt/slide sunroof, adaptive sport seats with driver's memory, aluminum handbrake lever and gear shifter, stainless steel door entry

Information 2008 PORSCHE 997 GT2 Club Sport A very rare car indeed - with only 34 UK RHD cars delivered in 2008 and 28 UK cars delivered in 2009 during the cars production run. The desirable Clubsport specification makes the car even rarer and this is surely just one of handful of RHD UK CS cars finished in the iconic Guards Red colour scheme. Performance - well the numbers of 204 mph top speed and 0-100 in 7.4 seconds (quicker than the V10 Carrera GT!) only tell half the story. The small matter of 530 BHP & crucially 680nm of torque from 2200 rpm result in a car which offers truly "Jekyll and Hyde" performance characteristics. Fuss free docile motoring in traffic with outstanding acceleration when you apply the throttle - even today this is probably one of the quickest point to point cars on the road. Rear wheel drive opposed to the 4wd employed by the Turbo around which this model is loosely based - means that intimate steering feel of a 2wd 911 is married to that monster of an engine and a 145kg weight saving over the more common Turbo model. Limted edition Porsche models such as 997 GT2 are highly sought after and when this is combined with the CLUB SPORT package - this represe
