RM Sotheby’s 2017 Villa Erba auction – repeat stream Classic and Performance Car

Watch some of the finest classic and performance cars head under the hammer at RM Sotheby's 2017 Villa Erba auction.

The 2017 Villa Erba auction features some extremely desirable classic cars, and a fair few modern performance icons too – including a road-legal McLaren P1 GTR and LaFerrari. Watch the auction repeat stream here:

One of the most exciting cars of the auction is 'brand new' 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8. Conceived as a racer, the wild-looking Porsche 911 RSR 3.8 is one of the most harcore 964-generation cars ever built, and RM Sotheby’s has just consigned an ‘as new’ and never raced example to its Villa Erba auction on 27 May.

With a mere ten kilometers on the clock, the car is un-used and even sports its original factory-applied Cosmoline wax coating – which explains the unusual appearance. The wax is usually applied to protect the car during transportation and storage before it is ever used, but in this case it has attracted dust from its 25 years in storage.

It’s unusual to find an example that hasn’t been raced – it is after all what it was built for – but this car was one of two ever special ordered with a fully-trimmed interior – in a rather eye-catching shade of Can Can Red interior. The exterior was ordered in Polar Silver Metallic paint, with the split rims ordered with Amethyst Metallic centres, and it’s an eye-catching combination to say the least.

Built at the very end of the 964’s life, the RSR was limited to 51 examples. Being built around the Turbo’s wider bodyshell, the racer featured a very special dry sump 3.8-litre M64/04 engine – producing an official (and conservative) power figure of 350bhp – coupled to a five-speed transmission. When the RSR was tested by Road & Track, the magazine timed a 0-60mph sprint of 3.7 seconds.

While this car never raced, the ones that did acheived some fantastic results, including a win at the Spa 24 Hours, Suzuka 1000 KM, and 24 Hours of Interlagos. It also took a class victory at Le Mans.

RM Sotheby’s hasn’t provided an estimate on the RSR, and although it probably won’t reach the highs of last year’s incredible 993 GT2 result, it will undoubtedly attract some serious attention.
