It might share the 924’s profile, but the flared arches, wider wheels and deeper front valance turn the older car’s delicacy into aggression. A 2.5-litre engine that was effectively half a 928’s V8 delivered on the promise. Handling and grip was very assured, and the 944 went on to outsell even the 924, keeping Porsche afloat in the early 1990s. Interior revisions in 1985 gave it an oval dashboard and revised door panels. For 1988-89 – the last year of ‘plain’ 944 production – engine capacity rose to 2.7 litres, offering little in the way of bhp, but handy low-down pulling power.
