Porsche 911 R sells for €483,000 at Bonhams' Zoute auction, while ex-Derek Bell 928 Club Sport sets a world record
Bonhams celebrated its most successful Zoute sale to date, at the Belgian seaside resort of Knokke Le-Zoute, on 7 October. Selling 28 of the 30 cars on offer, the large majority of cars on offer were Porsches, with two models (along with a Mercedes) achieving world-record prices.
One of the highly anticipated consignments was a Porsche 911 R, the first example to be offered for sale in a public auction. As a model that’s in huge demand, it was estimated to sell for €250,000-€350,000, but it quickly surpassed this making €483,000.
Delivered new to its Swedish first owner in July, this particular 911 R is numbered 135 and coming with 52km on the clock and is finished in white with the black and brown two-tone leather interior.
While retaining the GT3 RS’s naturally aspirated 500bhp engine, the 911 R was given a specially-developed six-speed manual transmission. The R is also very sleek externally, with none of the aggressive spoilers or wings of its track-oriented brothers. The underfloor aerodynamics were honed to make the R stable at high speed – important, as this is a car with a top speed in excess of 200mph.
The second world record price at the sale was taken by the ex-Derek Bell Porsche 928 Club Sport factory prototype. As just one of the five built (and three thought to still exist) and given to Porsche factory drivers, this 928 sold for €230,000.
Bonham’s biggest lot of the sale was a 1955 Porsche 356 ‘Pre-A’ 1600 Speedster. Selling for €586,500, this very rare car was first owned until 1958 by the well-known racing driver, Yves Tassin. Offered with matching numbers, it has won multiple concours awards in the past – including the trophy for ‘Most Sensitive Restoration’ at last year’s Zoute Concours d’Élegance.
‘This was our 4th annual Zoute Sale – and it keeps getting better and better,’ said Philip Kantor, Head of Motor Cars, Europe. ‘The event organisers have created a highly professional event and we are delighted to align ourselves with such a prestigious rally and concours. These same goals have enabled Bonhams to establish our presence and deliver superb results – with a string of world records being set. It once more demonstrates that collectors will target motor cars with magnificent provenance and rarity status.’
