One of the most successful Porsches to participate in rallying is being offered for sale by H&H Classics.
One of the 17 right hand drive Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS models sold new in the UK has come back on the market. Going by its chassis number 9113601501, this famous Stuttgart hero is one of the most successful rallying Porsche of all time, and is currently up for sale by private treaty with H&H Classics.
Participating in over 40 rallies across the globe, the car took a hattrick of international rally victories. It faced very stiff competition in the form of 14 identical RSs during these events, still managing to capture the accolade of most successful rallying Porsche.
The car's popularity heralds not only from success on the rally stages but its media coverage too. 1974 Eurovision winner Phil Coulter wrote a song about the RS and its driver – Cathal Brendon Curley – titled ‘Hey CB’. Dunlop sought use of the car as the face of its period advertising the campaign, the air-cooled Porsche also appeared this year on Channel 4’s Posh Pawn.
Six years into its rallying exploits the RS was shipped to South Africa once the homologation had run out. Here the car was upgraded to 3.4-lire RSR spec with factory supplied Porsche parts. At the national Formula 1 circuit of Kyalami the car was involved in an accident following which it was subsequently stored for 23 years.
In 2010 the car changed hands and was given a new lease of life by RS specialist Mark Waring restoring it to pristine original condition. The car is now back in the UK awaiting a new owner.
Dominic Lyncker, MD of H&H Classics, says: ‘We are delighted and honoured to be chosen to sell this legendary race car. This car is the stuff of motor racing history and is one of the greatest Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS of all time.’
