The king of the hot hatches? Many still say the Peugeot 205 GTI is the greatest of them all, and the prices for good examples have been rising for some time
The best hot hatch ever? Volkswagen may have started the GTi craze in 1976, but many see the 205 as king of the breed. Initially only available with a 1.6-litre engine, in 1986 the 205 received the 130bhp 1905cc engine, instantly giving more rapid acceleration and a higher top speed – although it is still hotly-debated which is the better car. The 1.6 is slightly lighter, and better balanced, but the more powerful 1.9 is ultimately faster. Both variants had a reputation for lift-off oversteer – which is also what attracts many people to the model. Exeptional examples have surpassed the £30k mark at auction, but £10k will get you an absolutely fantastic example.
