A feature of the autojumble in Luxemburg run byLetzebürger Oldtimer Federation was the announcement of ‘Retro box.’ The creation of Luxemburger Tom Meyer, the idea which is already working successfully in Germany, is to provide a historic car centre where owners can leave their classics on show.
Using the old Villeroy & Boch buildings in Luxemburg, Meyer is setting up a kind of working museum which is planned to attract shops and cafes too as public access will be free. As well as creating a Mecca for old car enthusiasts, it is also somewhere for their classics to be garaged safely. 'Luxemburg has 5000 classic cars which is impressive for a population of only half a million,' says Meyer, 'and not all owners are able to store their cars under cover.
'For €180per year per space in Retro Box, you can’t even rent a garage for that, if you can find one, and it’s more practical than keeping your classic in a barn. We don’t open till September, but we’ve had reservations for half the 120 spaces already.'
The Luxemburg auto jumble is a key date in the principality’s classic calendar. Among rare exhibits this year was a 1954 VEB Eisenach (pictured), the East German BMW, exactly the kind of obscure but fascinating car you could so easily miss in the vastness of Techno Classica.
