The beautifully cast aluminium components, French Racing Blue, er, bodywork with its louvres and unique body bolts, honeycombe grille, engine-spun dashboard and the use of leather are wonderfully evocative of Bugatti’s best styling cues.
The Bugatti desk design process consisted of initially borrowing a Bugatti Type 37 for inspiration. Photographs and sketches led to a storyboard, then detailed sketches of each component for the computer-aided design department. Having looked at hundreds of photographs of various Bugattis, the Luzzo team found inspiration for the mechanism to adjust the height of the desktop. By magnifying the Type 59’s Winfield carburettor synchronisation quadrants, they created the drive gears for the height adjustment, which are in turn driven by a worm gear activated by a crank handle.
Components for the Bugatti desk are machined from aircraft-grade billet and sheet aluminium, stainless steel and titanium. The desk features an aluminium chassis with the fabulously engineered lift mechanism teeth exposed on either side, which allow 70mm of desk height adjustment. An electric option was considered but the mechanical system is more in keeping.
This desk is an incredible piece of design and engineering. Consisting of 350 precision-made components, it took 3500 hours to complete the design, tooling, machining, painting and finishing. Painted Bugatti blue, with polished aluminium ‘sumps’, honeycomb grilles and a wooden top, standing on elegantly turned aluminium legs with the height-adjustment mechanism operational, this is actually a superb work of art rather than mere furniture.
A limited edition of only ten desks in this style will be produced and each will be numbered and have its own individual logbook recording the build team, materials, colour and finishing processes.
It is priced at £150,000. Luzzo is planning desks inspired by the Alfa Romeo Monza, Porsche 550 Spyder and Ferrari 250GTO – or whatever a client might want to choose.
