The TT is celebrated in the cinema

IoM TT on film

The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy is the oldest and most prestigious road race on earth – and it is set to be the subject of a forthcoming major new film shown in cinemas across the UK.

TT road racing requires nerves of steel – now, as throughout its 104-year history.

TT3D: Closer to the Edge follows the fortunes of a group of leading riders in the manic annual motorcycle competition, which began in 1907 and is today the biggest event of its kind, attracting participants and spectators from all over the world. The camera focuses on top names such as 15-time TT winner John McGuinness, the irreverent, sideburn-toting Guy Martin, and Michael Dunlop – nephew of the legendary Joey – throughout the lead-up to last year’s event and two weeks of hard, fast and highly dangerous racing as they compete to be King of the Mountain.

The exhilarating 3D format brings the TT’s thrills, spills and very human emotions to life – its loves and losses starkly illustrated as the 200mph action takes it toll. Interspersed with historical TT clips, the film – the world’s first feature-length 3D sports documentary – also pays tribute to the motorcycling greats who have gone before. TT3D: Closer to the Edge is due out on general release at the beginning of May.

Meanwhile, lovable Lincolnshire rogue Guy Martin is currently starring in his own BBC1 show, The Boat That Guy Built. In it, the 29-year-old truck mechanic – who is as charming, cheeky and eccentric as the late Fred Dibnah, with an equal love of all things old and oily – refurbishes a neglected narrow boat using inventions from the Industrial Revolution.
