Tuesday saw yet another re-launch of the MG marque. This time around we get an updated logo, a new website and crucially, a brand new car. Parent company SAIC is fully intent on making MG a credible world player and this latest car, the MG6 is their first serious foray into Europe.
‘Styled, Engineered and Built in Britain’ is the logo on the huge banner hanging from Longbridge and while this maybe stretching the truth somewhat, the new MG6 is definitely British in DNA despite what the critics claim. What cannot be disputed is how much money SAIC has invested in its Birmingham (nee Longbridge) facility.
The first MG6, the Fastback, is due to go on sale in mid-April, with first customers taking delivery mid-May. The launch of the saloon version has been brought forward from September to July after surprisingly strong interest during customer clinics. Only one powertrain is available at launch, the 1.8 turbo with an all new five-speed manual gearbox. CO2 emissions are 184 g/km meaning an initial road tax of £300, reducing to £250 thereafter. An all new, in-house designed 1.9 diesel is said to follow in 18 months.
The car is unusually sized, splitting the difference between Focus and Mondeo classes. MG say the 6 will offer 'very strong value for money' with the range being priced closer to the equivalent Focus than Mondeo. Pricing, while not confirmed is expected to start at £17,000 for the highly specified fastback and up to £20,000 for the top spec saloon. Insurance grouping is competitive at Groups 13 and 14. We are promised class leading space and engaging driving dynamics that will lead the Focus pack.
These values have always been true of any car coming from Longbridge. We’re also told the MG6 is a quality product from a premium brand. Time will tell if this really is the case but MG is confident. It is also realistic as to MG6 sales potential; only 2000 sales are expected in the first full year of production through an anticipated 50 UK dealers.
