It caused a sensation at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, and still looks just as good today...

The Audi quattro hits 30 in March 2010, and to celebrate, we've put together a package of evocative images for your to enjoy. Even though the concept of a high-performance coupe with 4WD has been pioneered sometime before by the Jensen FF, Audi truly popularised it by scoring a string of notable rally successes.

The quattro boasted 200bhp from its in-line five-cylinder engine, and that pushed it to a top speed of 135mph and from 0-60mph in around 7 seconds. Harly world-shattering, even then, but what allowed the quattro to stand apart from the opposition was its all-weather ability. You could drive it just about anywhere, and at a seriously quick pace.

It wasn't perfect - a lack of ABS on the early models landed some owners in trouble - but by the time the last 20V rolled off the line in 1991, it was pretty close.

Enjoy the gallery.
