Ridden: Harley-Davidson 2010 new models

Dyna Wide Glide returns

Harley-Davidson has unveiled three new models for 2010, and Octane was on hand to ride them at the world launch in Rapid City, South Dakota.

The new Dyna Wide Glide makes a return to Harley’s range after a two year hiatus and is what most riders would describe as a ‘classic chopper’ with a low back end and raked out front wheel.

Ordinarily this would be of some concern as this style of bike is seldom known for its handling due to a tendency for a vague feeling from the front wheel, but for 2010 Harley has concentrated its efforts on stiffening the Wide Glide’s chassis, a move that has transformed the bike. Unlike previous models of Wide Glide, once on the go the 2010 bike has a feeling of security from the front tyre and can happily be cornered up until the point that your boot’s sole starts to get worn away, which is a remarkable improvement.

Add to this the introduction of the new generation of 1584cc V-twin engine, which includes a sixth gear for overdrive and 94ft.lb of torque yet still retains the wonderful raw feeling and sound that epitomises a Harley V-twin motor,  and you have a bike that now delivers the full Harley experience yet can be enjoyed in the bends as well as the straights. Although it retails at £10,950 for the plain black or red colours, the flame paint scheme on the tank, which looks fantastic in the sun, is an extra £490.

Also new for 2010 is the Fat Boy Special, which is essentially the same as the current Fat Boy but comes dressed in a moody black finish rather than chrome and has lowered suspension to suit shorter riders, and the Electra Glide Ultra Limited, which is an accessorised Electra Glide and uses the bigger capacity Twin Cam 103 motor. The Special costs £14,730 while the Limited is £20,180.

Where do I begin ... ?

What's the point in sending Journos half way round the world to trot out this old nonsense time after time?

There are four new Harley models for 2010: there's also a new XR1200X with significant changes over the basic XR1200, which is still available, although that's not a US market model.

The Dyna Chassis hasn't seen any significant changes since 2006 when it was completely redesigned - a year that also heralded the arrival of the 6-speed gearbox in all Dyna models - which was a year before the 1584cc engine came out. The differences between this and the previous generation Wide Glide are visual: in fact, the geometry of the older generation gave a more neutral ride than the new one: I know, I've ridden both.

To continue, the Fat Boy Special hasn't got lowered suspension: the writer is thinking of the US Market model, the Fat Boy Lo. Of course, there's a chance that he was testing a US market model, but then as the Wide Glide is the International version of the bike (normal number plate, not a sidemount), it's probably just something he couldn't be bothered to look up properly.

Small wonder that Harley is so frequently misrepresented in the media with such lazy journalism and poor information ... in fact, it's utterly worthless.

Stick to what you know, Jon.
