'Despite everything, there are still some massive gaps in our collection,' curator Steve Bagley told Octane. 'Our brief is to represent the city’s motoring heritage as comprehensively as we can. However, there is a list of cars the museum would like to acquire to make it even more representative.'
Thus, Steve and his team would be interested to hear from anyone who might be able to provide a Daimler SP250 (Dart), Triumph TR3, TR4 and TR5 and/or a pre-World War Two Triumph Dolomite for its displays. 'The Daimler Dart is important as it marked a complete change of direction for Daimler, as, obviously, are the Triumph TRs. We’ve got a TR2 and a TR7, but not the ones in the middle. So, if anyone wants to give us one...'
However, this could mean that some of the current cars on show have to go elsewhere. 'We have a museum that’s full and a store that’s also full, so we have to be fairly selective,' said Steve. 'Controversially, this will mean having to dispose of some cars. If you want your collection to work, you have to say that sometimes you have to let stuff go.'
However, he is keen to reassure enthusiasts that any vehicles which do find themselves surplus to requirements will be found very good homes. 'There is a process we go through; they go into the disposals column of the Museums Journal so they can be offered to other museums. If that fails, they can then go into the public or private domain. However, we’ll get in contact with all the other major motor museums first, before anything else.' So, definitely no candidates for the government’s scrappage scheme, then.
If you can help with information on any of the Coventry-related classics being sought, please contact the museum on +44 (0)2476 234270 or enquiries@transport-museum.co.uk.
