A private ceremony was held at the Viminale Palace where Lamborghini donated a police version of the Gallardo, called the LP560-4 Polizia. The new Gallardo replaces the previous version, in use since 2004, now boasts 560bhp and a top speed of 203mph.

The new car is fitted with state of the art technology including automatic number plate recognition, high-tech video and the GPS-enabled 'Proof Video Data System.

The classic array of police equipment is on board too, such as a gun holster, police radio equipment and the “Paletta,” the traditional hand-held stop sign used to advise motorists and traffic offenders to pull over. There is also a defibrillator used to restore a normal heart rhythm to patients by delivering an electrical shock to the heart to stop massive cardiac arrhythmia or ventricular fibrillation, and thus save lives.
