The German Grand Prix seemed the perfect location for Mercedes-Benz to pull the wraps off its amazing new 63 AMG Black Series Coupe. We'd already had a close look at the car at the Paul Ricard circuit a month before the launch and loved what we saw - it's a 509bhp monster that looks and sounds like nothing else for its £100,000 price tag. In short, the new two-door coupe looks like a DTM car for the road.
The C63 AMG Coupé Black Series goes on sale next spring, and it encompasses all the AMG family traits that we've come to expect over the years – monster torque and power, wild (yet somehow understated) styling, and a circuit-biased chassis set-up that allows rapid A to B averages. It's powered by AMG's normally-aspirated 6.3-litre V8, which has been modified with forged pistons, conrods and crankshaft, as well as a larger oil cooler. The end result is an unmistakable soundtrack and instant on-demand performance.
The rear-wheel drive drivetrain features a seven-speed AMG Speedshift transmission, with wet dual-clutch (eliminating the need for a torque converter), and is controlled by four gearbox settings. At its fastest setting, Sport-Plus, it changes gear in 100ms. The limited slip differential is allied with the ESP system, which unusually these days, can be switched right off.
The wider arches aren't just for show, though - the revised chassis has wider tracks — up 40mm at the front and 75mm at the rear — and combined with larger brakes to make this a car that you can play with on the circuit in great confidence. Well, that's what the Mercedes-Benz engineers told us. Visually, it's a stunning car, with race seats up-front, and none at all at the rear, unless you specify that you want them in. And although the car we saw lacked obvious aerodynamic appendages, if you're that way inclined, you can have a large carbonfibre rear wing and other additions.
