Belgian enthusiasts are planning to commemorate the Brussels GP which was run for a couple of seasons after the war then again between 1958-62 on a circuit set on roads round the 1958 international exhibition site.
Over the weekend of 2–4 September, what the organisers, Formula Club, refer to as ‘demonstrations’ are planned for single seaters in four groups, pre war, 1946-60, 1961 to 1985 and 1986-90. A circuit using parts of the original course which goes around the Atomium on the north west side of Brussels has been drawn up.
Formula Club has run the Historicar meeting at Chimay for the last ten years and hopes the new Brussels gathering can be a prelude to actual racing in the future. Club president Serge Stevens explained that the 1961 race was particularly significant as held in April it signified the first race of the new 1.5 litre grand prix formula and was supported by all teams except Ferrari eager to try out their new cars prior to the traditional championship opener at Monaco.
In a competition run, oddly, in three 100km rounds, Brabham, Cooper, won on aggregate from McLaren also Cooper and Tony Marsh, Lotus. The following year, Willy Mairesse won for Ferrari in front of his home crowd, but there was no race in 1963 as the severe frosts of the winter had damaged the track; Zolder opened soon afterwards and the impetus for racing round the Atomium was lost.
