Preview: HSCC E-type race series

The Historic Sports Car Club will run a special race series dedicated to the Jaguar E-type in 2011. As the famous model celebrates its 50th birthday, the HSCC and the Jaguar Heritage Trust have joined forces to mark the year with a series of races at high-profile historic race meetings.
 
The races will only be open to FIA Appendix K specification E-types, and the HSCC is hoping to attract a field of over 30 cars from all over the world. Races are likely to be held at Silverstone, Oulton Park, Brands Hatch and the Nurburgring.
 
The race at the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting is particularly poignant as it was on 15 April 1961 that two E-types made the model's race debut at the Cheshire track in the hands of Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori. Hill went on to win the race and begin the E-Type's motor sporting success story.
 
'We wanted to mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of the original E-type, one of the world's best loved classic cars,' said Tony O'Keeffe, Curator of the Jaguar Heritage Trust.
 
In racing, the E-type has been winning races for 50 years and continues to be hugely popular across historic racing. Within the HSCC, E-Types are found in the Guards Trophy, Historic Road Sports and '70s Road Sports series.

I really hope the Graham White of the HSCC is able to generate a grid of cars that are correct for these races.
Historic sports car racing has become what we used to call mods sport racing inthe late 1960's early 1970's.This has luckilly been recognised by the Ben Cussons and Carol Spragg who have launched a new series for pre '62 genuine GT Cars running to period specification.A typical FIA Appendix K car racing today bears little or NO likenes to how they actually ran in period.The worst offenders are sadly the 'E'Type and AC Cobra followed by TVR and Marcoss.As this article is devoted to the 'E' Type lets take a look at a typical one? It will have a reproduction bodyshell in thin guage aluminium,a reproduction wide angle cylinder head,a reproduction lightweight engine block and be running specialist steel lightweight crankshaft,rods and pistons.The differential will be housed in a magnesium casing and the lsd will be a special with altered ramp angle etc.And so it goes on there is nothing on some of these cars that ever left Jaguar at Brown's Lane.They are total replicas but adorn so called 'Historic Racing'grids. If this series is to attract the real cars to come out then the entry rules need to be set out now as the ownwers of these original cars do not want to be on the same grid as these re-creations.Todays organisers have let them in and need now to show them the way out! Lets hope we get some good ones out!
