Michael Schumacher has announced that he will be temporarily returning to Formula One, to substitute for Felipe Massa, who suffered a serious head injury in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The seven-time World Driver's Champion has so far only confirmed a return for the European Grand Prix.

Schumacher, who is contracted to Ferrari and acts as an advisor to the team, said: 'For team loyalty reasons I can't ignore this unfortunate situation.'

The German legend has been chosen over test drivers Marc Gene and Luca Badoer. Massa continues to recover from his skull fracture, and after five days in intensive care, doctors have been encouraged by his recovery rate, and despite initial fears that he may not race again, are saying that his race fitness should be restored.

Schumacher hasn't driven a Formula One car since April 2008, and because of the F1 testing ban, will not be able to drive the 2009 Ferrari F1 car until first practice at Valencia. 'Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race,' said the Italian company.

'Michael Schumacher has shown his willingness and in the next few days he will undergo a specific programme of preparation at the end of which it will be possible to confirm his participation in the championship starting with the European Grand Prix,' a Ferrari spokesperson said.
