The 36th running of the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races will not only spotlight Porsche as its featured marque but will also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 917K.
Fittingly, four 917Ks will take to the Laguna Seca track, but what has really piqued interest is that three of these cars are from the legendary Gulf Wyer team, which dominated Le Mans during the early 1970s.
‘The Porsche 917K was the greatest race car of all time,’ said Vic Elford, who claimed victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring and who raced the 917 at Le Mans as a Porsche factory driver.
Elford, along with Brian Redman and former executive director of the Gulf Wyer team John Horsman, will be in California to watch the 917s race.
