The win also put an end to the Brawn GP domination of the last two races, with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello trailing home in third and fourth position. Jenson commented wryly at the finish, 'We couldn't keep up, and once the Red Bulls were 15 seconds up the road, we knew it was game over.'
However, the Brawn GP drivers still head the driver's championship table, with Button now on 21 points, ahead of Barrichello on 15. The race was the first to follow the FIA ruling that Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams' double deck diffusers were legal under the current regulations - and by first practice Renault had installed a similar rear end to its car, helping Fernando Alonso to second on the grid.
Due to the wet weather, the race was started behind the safety car, which led the field for eight laps before peeling off. Once underway, Vettel and Webber reeled away from the Brawn twins, only fighting once the pitstops were underway.
The other major story of the race surrounded last year's championship protagonists, Ferrari and McLaren. The italian team once again failed to score points, recalling its terrible 1980 season. McLaren took a step forward with Hamilton, in particular, showing genuine if erratic speed. Fifth and sixth poisitions in the race was as good as it gets on current form.
The Red Bull team was understandably delighted with the result. 'It’s just fantastic', Sebastian Vettel said. 'Winning the
second race having won one for Toro Rosso and now one for Red Bull is
fantastic. I am extremely happy and hope we can continue working in
this direction.'
