The race was full of incidents, with two safety car periods, as well as numerous crashes. last year's championship contenders, Ferrari and McLaren were both off the pace, leaving the running to Brawn GP, Red Bull and Williams-Toyota. The defending champion, Lewis Hamilton started from 18th on the grid, and thanks to attrition and good strategy calls, crossed the finish line in fourth position. He was elevated to third when third placed man, Jarno Trulli, was penalised by 25 seconds for passing under a yellow flag.
Out in front, Jenson Button sailed serenely to his second victory; an amazing achievement considering the team didn't effectively exist three weeks before the race. Second placed Brawn GP driver, Rubens Barrichello, struggled with his anti-stall from the line, and was engulfed by the chasing pack, picking up damage to his wing along the way, but finished behind Button when Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica collided clumsily four laps from the end...
Jenson Button summed-up: 'This is a fairy tale ending really to the first race of our
career together. I hope we can continue this way.
We are going to fight every way we can to keep this car competitive and
at the front. This has got to continue and this is where we want to be.'
The next race takes place at Kuala Lumpur for the Malaysian Grand Prix on April 5.
