A bunch of post-sale deals helped Silverstone Auctions to a 59% sell-through rate following its second auction, at the Walter Hayes Trophy meeting.

Top price was the strong £136,400 for a right-hand drive manual-shift 1969 AC 428 coupe – a model that has been in the doldrums until recently – but the two other big lots failed to sell. The 1960 Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato 3C (sporting a few bubbles in the paint) failed to find a new owner, and the 1962 Morgan Plus 4, said to be the 1962 Le Mans class winner, sold after the auction for £120,000 after questions over its identity on sale day hampered bidding.

The ex-Chris Lawrence 1963 Deep Sanderson ‘Twinny’ single-seater once again failed to find a buyer, even after its 2008 appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and in the Mini 50 race at the Revival.

Still, Lawrence’s Monica, offered at no reserve, sold for a fine £55,000, and auctioneer Jonathan Humbert found a respectable £96,000 on a Jaguar XK150S 3.4 Open Two-Seater, £81,400 on a 1957 XK120 coupe, £40,700 on a near mint BMW 3.0CSL and £31,900 on a tidy-looking 1972 Lamborghini Espada - one for the brave. A very straight and proper (and imposing) Jaguar MkIX automatic pulled the right money at £35,750, and post-sale deals included £10,333 on a tidy but not perfect Ford Escort RS2000 MkII and £6200 on a 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone.

This was in mild drag race trim, but as the sister to the Ford Falcon, its value lies in it eligibility for FIA pre-‘66 historic saloon racing – which is precisiely what it was recently imported from the US for. A tidy Mini Cooper S MkIII made the right £12,320, and a 998 Cooper Mk1 lookalike in splendid condition looked very appealing on Minilites at £6875.

In the UK, £70,000-90,000 is asking a bit much for an ‘Eleanor’ clone Mustang, however nicely done, and it failed to find a new home, but a Rolls-Royce Phantom 1 with torpedo body by Wilkinson looked very good value at £59,400, a concours 1932 MG Magna fetched £41,800 and a restored 1969 MGC Roadster was a healthy £17,600.
