Sotheby’s Australia will conduct an Important Collectors’ Motor Car sale by public tender exhibiting in Double Bay, Sydney, from the 13-15 October. The sale will include two rare and unique collectors’ cars which have never before been available for sale by public tender: a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and the Peter Brock Dakar Car. The Silver Ghost, chassis number 14PK, known as the ‘Riviera Car’, was originally used by Rolls-Royce as a demonstrator model in the South of France to attract prospective clients.
The ‘Riviera Car’ has been maintained in marvellous running order and has been restored to its original delivery specification of, “yellow on the sides with black wings and wheels, the deck and top leaves of the bonnet in polished aluminium, the upholstery, red antique grain cowhide leather”, retaining the sophistication and essence of old world glamour. Formerly in the collection of the late Laurie Ogle, the car has been described by journalist David Berthon as, “one of the finest examples of the late series 40/50 Silver Ghost in the world today”.
Another notable item included in the October sale is the Peter Brock Dakar Car. Peter Brock’s last car, it was conceptualised by the Australian champion who began its construction before his death in 2006.
