The 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa prototype has sold for a world record $ 16.39 million at Gooding & Company's auction at the Pebble Beach Concours in Monterey, California.
With bidding starting at $ 10m, the Testa Rossa was always expected to achieve a spectacular price, and there was applause in the auction room when bidding reached $ 13m, meaning it had overtaken the previous high of 12,402,500 achieved by RM, also for a Testa Rossa, in May 2009. Bidding ended at $ 14,900,000 – or $ 16,390,000 with premiums.
The Gooding auction was split into two this year, with the Testa Rossa headlining the Saturday night and the Whittell Coupe Duesenberg (featured in issue 98 of Octane) achieving top price on the Sunday night, at $ 10.34m.
Other notable Gooding results included: 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California, $ 3,355,000; 1963 Shelby Cobra 289 Factory Team Car, $ 2,585,000; 1953 Ferrari 375 Vignale Coupe,$ 2,200,000; 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, $ 1,210,000; 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider, $ 1,025,000; 1956 Ferrari 275 GTB, $ 1,001,000; 1959 Fiat "Ferrari" Scuderia Factory Transporter, $ 990,000; 1956 Ferrari 195 Inter Berlinetta, $ 990,000; 1921 Bentley 3 Litre, $ 962,500.
