THE year of the E-type is 2011, with the anniversary year being responsible for seeing some seriously significant examples coming under the hammer in the past few months. The question is – have E-types peaked or will this one prove that there's sustained strength in the market?
This E-type, the 12th-from-last car off the line, and one of the sought after commemorative models. It's estimated to fetch £140,000-160,000.
Early in its life, the E-type was part of JDHT President Allen Lloyd's 40-car collection, and during this time, it was restored by XK Engineering at a cost of over £40,000 despite having only covered a low mileage. The car was then passed on to another owner after eight years in the collection, and used sparingly. In 2009, it was sold again to the current seller, who set about sorting out the 'tired' paintwork. It was stripped and repainted and any brightwork that was not up to standard was re-plated.
Mechanically the car was thoroughly checked throughout and any faults found rectified; even the instruments were stripped and cleaned. The 2009 work undertaken by Hilton & Moss totalled £34,000, but the result is one pristine E-type.
The car has since won the Best E-type at the JDC International Day. It represents an excellent opportunity for an enthusiast to pick up an exceptional E-type.
