Unlike their V12 brethren, the big flat-12s have been seriously languishing for half a decade. Though the Jenson Button 1978 512 (that’s the black one that previously had been knocking around the trade for the prior couple of years) famously bid up to only £52,000 at Bonhams’ Hendon sale on 11 Apri, Mike Wheeler of Rardley Motors has just sold a fuel-injected car to Hong Kong for the £95,000 asking price – and he has an immaculate carburettor car that might be going there too at the same money.
‘£120,000 is where the best cars ought to be,’ he predicts. And, after years ‘selling cars from a shed out the back,’ Wheeler has finally moved his office around to the front of the Grayshott showroom that he shares with sports car specialist Adrian Blyth: well, actually, with a lifesize cardboard cut-out of Enzo Ferrari.
