Better known for its fine art auctions, Auckland, New Zealand-based Webbs has amassed an impressive lot list for its 22 March sale.
Heading it up – at least in terms of drama – is the Lola T165/70 (above), which is offered for sale in road-legal trim. It pushes out 610bhp and must remain one of the fastest cars you can drive on the highway. The estimate is NZ0,000-240,000 (£86,000-115,000) which, in terms of bang-for-your-buck, has the £2m-plus McLaren F1 soundly beaten.
The sale is heavy on competition cars, led by a 1923 Alfa Romeo RL Targa Florio, which differs from other RLs by being half the weight, and more powerful, thanks to better breathing. Estimate is NZ0,000–780,000 (£325,000-373,000). Also on offer is a 1924 V12 aero-engined Sunbeam (NZ0,000–600,000 or £239,000-287,000), and a 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster (NZ0,00–240,000 or £105,000-115,000) – a low estimate for a car potentially worth £300,000 in the UK. With that in mind, it’s likely to be a competitive auction.
