Bonhams sold 49 of a mixed bag of 57 cars offered at its annual sale just north of Oxford. Top seller was a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II with Weymann body by Mulliner for £205,000, while, in a month of high E-type sales, a near-perfect 1962 3.8 S1 roadster fetched £100,500.
Another tranche of Aston Martins from a large collection that has been spread around several sales sold, including a tidy 1971 DBS V8 for £25,070 and a 1980 V8 Volante at £35,600, and a Ferrari 550 Maranello looked good value at £32,775. Cheaper fare included a 1984 Nissan Cherry with just 3000 miles from new for £633 and a restoration project 1961 Jaguar Mk2 3.8 with a caved-in roof – and a spare roof ready to weld on – was £2875.
Buy of the sale was probably the 1959 XK150 Open Two Seater that will retail for at least £10,000 more than the £46,600 it sold for. Though door fit wasn’t perfect (they rarely are), and it had been a 3.8 since 1972 instead of a 3.4 as delivered new in Chelsea to the Marchioness of Bute (Johnny Dumfries’ father), it was an original right-hand drive roadster, of which only 95 were made, with overdrive, and it had been gently titivated throughout its life rather than recently shinily restored, showing nicely settling-in leather, and 27-year-old paint holding up well.
