A well-used and enjoyed 1950 Healey Silverstone brought a healthy £115,500, but the much-awaited Big Healey ‘Bulldog’ racer of Denis Welch bid only to £180,000 while watched by a gathering of the Healey racing clans. Not enough – but, as the Healey specialist confirmed to Octane immediately post-auction, he was clearly relieved to be taking it home.
A 1936 MG TA special, bright as a new pin, was £41,250 and two Aston Martin replicas – or ‘Evocations’ of a DB3S and a DBR2, with BMW and Jaguar power – sold for £35,200 and £38,500. At the other end of the scale, a restoration project 1964 A-H 3000 MkIII, a former press car, bid to £7700, a rare Britannia GT rolling shell fetched £8525, ‘Whizzo’s 1938 Austin Seven Pearl Cabriolet went for £6820 to a phone bidder, and a tidy Triumph GT6 HSCC racer looked stonking value at £4400. A Ford Escort RS1600, built up from parts in 1971 and a rally car all its life, looked very appealing at £33,000.
Though H&H has done exceptionally well with AC Aces over the past two years, two big lots late in the sale, a 1962 Ace 2.6 and an Allard J2X (though with later Cadillac motor) both failed to find new owners; but in the days that followed, the company was still converting provisional bids into confirmed sales.
Full results as soon as we have them.
