Bonhams' Oxford sale is a recent and popular addition to the auction house's busy classic car auction calendar, and one that continues to grow. For the 2011 sale, the lots are coming in thick and fast, and are headed with a number of important pre-war cars.

Here's a run-down of some of the star lots.

1952 Bentley MkVI 4½-Litre Coupé
£70,000-90,000

One of the prettiest bespoke offerings on the Bentley chassis was Hooper & Co's 'razor edge' two-door coupé, designed by the firm's managing director, Osmond Rivers. Only seven of these cars were built, 'B287NY' being the last. It is believed that only three survive, this being the only one in the United Kingdom. Having had only a handful of owners, 'B281NY' spent part of its life the USA where it was owned by the Mayor of Treasure Island City, Florida, Mr Walter Stubbs. After returning to the UK at the end of the 1980s, the car was offered for sale by marque specialists, P & A Wood. The current vendor bought the Bentley at this time and subsequently had it treated to a complete 'body off' restoration, commenced by Alpine Eagle in 2005, which included the engine, gearbox, drive train, bodywork, interior trim and paintwork. Finished in 2007, 'B287NY' was shown for the first time in many years at the R-REC Annual Rally where it placed second in the concours, beaten only by a very pretty R-Type Continental. Since returning to the UK the car has covered fewer than 1500 miles, most of which have been since restoration.

'B2B7NY' is regularly serviced and maintained regardless of cost by Alpine Eagle and is described by the vendor as in excellent condition, driving superbly and effortlessly, ready to go touring. Offered for sale at a fraction of the cost of restoration, 'B287NY' comes complete with a comprehensive tool kit, including large and small tools, an original handbook, radiator mascot and 'town cap'. Accompanying documentation includes sundry restoration invoices, old-style logbook, current MoT/tax and Swansea V5.

1929 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Phantom II Weymann Sports Saloon
£180,000-220,000

Chassis number '61XJ' was originally ordered on 15th October 1929 via Car Mart Ltd, of Park Lane, London. The first owner was Captain Leslie George Wylde, a gentleman renowned for his taste in attractive and sporting motor cars.  After Wylde had grown tired of his Phantom it passed through a handful or owners and was modified for each accordingly. In 1947 '61XJ' was prepared for storage and remained off the road for some 30 years thereafter. It is believed that this careful storage is what kept the body in such remarkable condition, for '61XJ' still retains the original fabric as fitted at H J Mulliner's works. After re-commissioning, the Phantom was used for minor rallies and touring events.

In mid-2003 Alpine Eagle were commissioned to obtain '61XJ' for one of their regular customers, Captain Bill Borchert Larson. He affectionately named the car 'The Captain', a reference to its overwhelming presence and authority. After its condition had been assessed it was decided that the car would be treated to a 'last nut and bolt' restoration to exacting standards. At the conclusion of the 10-month restoration, which cost in excess of £250,000, '61XJ' was unveiled at the 2004 R-REC Annual Rally where it won first prize for Elegance and came first in class.

After passing to new ownership in 2007, '61XJ' was entered in the following year's R-REC Annual Rally and four years after restoration came a highly credible 2nd, losing only by a few points (deducted for not winding or setting the clock!) There is absolutely no question that '61XJ' has been given a world-class restoration and even now would not look out of place on the Pebble Beach lawns.

'61XJ' has always received a warm welcome wherever it goes and always has a throng of admirers. Having covered little more than 1000 miles since its most comprehensive restoration, this lovely Phantom II is suitable for touring in the grand manner and any number of prestigious concours events. The car is offered for sale complete with a comprehensive original tool kit and an original nickel-plated mascot. Accompanying documentation includes an old-style logbook, fully detailed Motor Historica report, sundry bills and restoration records, current MoT/tax and Swansea V5. A unique chance to own a wonderful piece of motoring history.

1934 Lagonda Rapier Special
£50,000-60,000

Comprehensively re-commissioned in the UK by a renowned Vintage/PVT race engineer, 'WP 6822' has been fitted with new Dunlop racing tyres and when rolling-road dynamometer tested in October 2009 developed 180bhp at 6,000rpm on 22psi boost. Anyone doubting the Rapier's speed needed only consult the accompanying Phoenix Park results sheet for the August 2009 meeting, where it comfortably won the Pre-55 Sprint 1B event, beating a Bugatti Type 35B into second place.

Described by the vendor as in generally excellent mechanical condition, this unique post-Vintage racer comes with a bespoke covered trailer, VSCC Buff Form and a quantity of spares to include a new piston and cylinder liner, front and rear wheels, and three brake drums.

1998 Ferrari 456GTA Coupé
£35,000-40,000

Owned by the lady vendor from new, this automatic transmission example has benefited from a 'no expense spared' programme of routine maintenance that has seen some £23,000 spent on it over the past ten years, mostly with H R Owen (bills on file). The most recent major service was carried out by marque specialists Rosneath Engineering in 2010 when work included checking the valve clearances, changing the cam belts, servicing the gearbox and a full safety check. Rosneath Engineering described the car as 'a fabulous example of a 456 and most of the usual problems are not apparent.'

Fitted with a Tracker device, the car is offered with its Ferrari leather wallet and instruction manuals, stamped service book, a quantity of expired MoTs and tax discs, MoT to 27th May 2011 and Swansea V5C document. It should be noted that the current personalised registration is being retained by the vendor.
