Report: Coys auction, Autosport Show, NEC, Birmingham

Coys rallies forward

Big bids secured some impressive competition cars at the Autosport show.

Bizzarrini was the top seller at Coys

A Ford Focus WRC previously owned by Colin McRae and an RS200 Evolution rally cars were among the best selling at Coys’ most successful auction ever held at Autosport International Show.

Colin McRae’s Ford Focus WRC sold for £108k to a UK buyer. The RS200 Evolution (one of only 22 ever made) went to a Spanish rally enthusiast for £126k after some frantic bidding from Switzerland, Northern Europe and UK buyers.

Other historic milestones at the auction included a Jaguar XJ220, which sold for £130k; despite the warm reaction the concept car elicited in 1988, the production model never quite sustained buyers’ expectations and production was limited to 281 examples. It is interesting to note that Coys also sold another XJ220 only the previous month, in London, for £147k.

A wonderful and extremely rare, though not exactly immaculate 1968 Bizzarrini 5300GT with a Chevrolet V8 engine, sold for a record £250k, again to a Spanish buyer. A Ferrari 365 Daytona, sold post-auction, went for £165k.

The event, which took place on Saturday, 15 January, grossed around £1.4m (with 70% sales): the highest score since Coys started holding an auction at the biggest European motorsport show, ten years ago.
'Works rally cars, especially if they boast an important past owner, are more and more sought after,' said Nick Wells, Coys’ auction negotiator. 'The ‘80s and ‘90s rally cars and little racers afford some serious fun without having to spend millions in precious metal.'
