The creation of the mew motor car department at Sotheby's Australia marks a another strategic move of the auctioneer in Australia. This department will be responsible not only for Collectors’ Cars from the Veteran, Edwardian, Vintage and pre- and post-war periods through to modern classics, but also classic motorbikes and motorboats, number plates and automobilia including automotive art and photography and luxury items for a motoring lifestyle.

The expertise of our specialists remains integral to the success of the company and Sotheby’s Australia will continue to offer a high standard of service to all clients. James Nicholls has been appointed National Head of the Department, and brings a wealth of experience to the company from working in senior management positions in Australia, Asia Pacific and Europe. Based in Sydney he is ably supported by well-known authority, Senior Specialist David Bird in Sydney, Head of Collectors’ Motor Cars in Melbourne, Catherine Davison and Administrator Lachlan Brett.

The first Collectors’ Motor Car auction will take place in Melbourne, 18 April. Early consignments include a rare Ferrari, Porsche and De Tomaso vehicles along with a marvellous 1924 Vauxhall OE 30/98, purported by many to be the pinnacle of English Vintage cars. Delivered to Australia in 1925 it has undergone a ground up restoration over a ten year period during which it has covered just 1000 miles (pictured with its Velox type body in aluminium).

The global market for Collectors’ Motor Cars has proved particularly sturdy over the past 12 to 18 months with vehicles exhibiting rarity, importance, originality, condition and provenance continuing to achieve record prices at auction. We expect this trend to be in evidence at the aforementioned Melbourne auction and subsequent auctions in Sydney 18 July and 28 November.
