Coys, Ascot and Padova (October 3 and 24)

Coys' juggling act

Coys has a number of star lots for its upcoming Ascot and Padova sales

For the second time in 2009, Coys has set itself the tough challenge of running two auctions in different countries during the same month.

Opening the October action is its annual Spirit of Motoring sale at Ascot. Top of the bill, in terms of interest, is the Daimler DB18 (above right) used by King George VI and his family on his visit to South Africa in 1947.

The Daimler, which was on show at the Royal Natal National Park Hotel for years, will be sold at no reserve. Cars with royal association always score well and, fuelled by the atmosphere at the select event, bidding for it is likely to get competitive.

The Coys bandwagon then moves to join the Padova Auto Moto d’Epoca classsic car show with a 100-strong lot list. The cars on offer have been sourced from across Europe and include a delightful no-reserve 1956 Bentley S1 Drophead Coupé by HJ Mulliner, a restoration project at no reserve, and a 1996 Hawk Cobra 289 replica, which has been used in parade laps at Le Mans, Goodwood and Reims. Yours for between €30,000-40,000 and as good as the real thing.

Also keep a close eye on the 1958 Ferrari 250GT (above left) at €400,000-450,000, a 1952 Mercedes-Benz 300D four-door convertible (€130,000-160,000), and a wonderful Fiat: a 1948 1100 Vignale Superleggera Coupe (€35,000-40,000).

Last year’s sale was a success given the changing climate, and Coys is expecting more of the same in 2009.
