The forecasted deluge predicted for the 45th running of the Beaulieu International Autojumble in the New Forest thankfully didn’t materialise, and on the whole the weather was ideal for rummaging around the vast site for that elusive old car or motorcycle part. Even poking around the hundreds of classic cars and bikes for sale in the Automart arena or Bonhams Auction. It wasn't too hot that the ice creams melted, and not cold enough to warrant coats.
Due to the weakness of the Pound, our continental cousins flocked in with German, French and Dutch accents in particular adding to the great international atmosphere. Their pockets bulging with Euros eager to snap up a bargain, traders reported brisk business on Friday’s trade day especially, and it was interesting to note that many of the prices were marked up in both Pounds and Euros.
There was plenty else to see and do, with a display by the AA of their historic vehicles, live trad-jazz music, a wide variety of food and drink on offer, a birds-eye view of the proceedings from the mono-rail, plus all the other Beaulieu attractions including the motor museum, special exhibitions and Lord Montagu’s house and gardens.
For many of the traders, actually selling their wares is not the be all and end all of Beaulieu. Many regard the autojumble as a huge social gathering. A chance to catch up with old friends and chew the cud over a glass of red wine, fresh bread and brie - plenty of which was much in evidence. All in all, a lovely, laid back event.
