The exclusive The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, part of the famed Monterey Historics week, awarded its Best of Show award this year to a one-off Ferrari 375 America, owned by Jack E Thomas of Missouri.
The Ferrari was built in 1955 for Gianni Agnelli, later to become head of the Fiat empire, and widely credited with turning around the fortunes of the family-run firm. But in 1955, Gianni was living the playboy life while his grandfather looked after the fortunes of Fiat, and requested Pinin Farina to build him 'a Ferrari that doesn't look like a Ferrari'.
Agnelli kept the Ferrari until 1959, and it passed through a number of owners before being bought by Jack E Thomas in 2001. By then it had been painted several times, and on the 2001 Copperstate 1000 and Colorado Grand road rallies Jack encouraged bystanders to pick off flakes of paint.
It was later restored by Motion Products and has since won a number of major awards, including the GT class at Pebble Beach in 2003.
Other highlights of The Quail included special displays of The Great Ferraris, Pre-War Sports and racing, Bugatti Veyrons and the 50th anniversary of the E-type. Plus, of course, there was the gourmet food and drink that The Quail is now famed for.
