The Italian personnel manning one or two stands dedicated to prestigious Italian badges at Salon Privé 2011, on 22-24 June, was easily recognisable: they were shivering in their designer high-heeled shoes, and shaking their heads at the sheer mention of ‘garden party’. For the British summer struck again at the annual classic and supercar gathering on Syon House grounds, layering rain and wind interspersed with slices of lemony sun.
Now in its sixth year, Salon Privé moved from its original venue at the Hurlingham Club to new premises this year, and took with it the expected full-fat display of important models, from Veyrons and Aventadors to a collection of Group C Porsche racers. Syon House’s front doors were flanked by the latest Aston One-77 and a more seasoned Aston DBS.
The event drew London-based car fans as well as ladies with extravagant hats (on the Thursday, aptly named Ladies’ Day), and car collectors with their pride and joy gracing the lawns at the back of Syon House, competing in the Concours d’Elégance. RM Auction, a firm fixture at Salon Privé, echoed the same elegant atmosphere over the walled garden, its catalogue brimming with rare Rolls-Royces and Bentleys.
The Spirit of Ecstasy lives on.
