Report: Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance

Double Duesenberg win at Amelia

The biggest Amelia Island Concours so far sees two Duesenbergs win best of show

Best in show

Best in show winners, Mormon Meteor and Duesenberg SJN

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, now the USA’s most important concours event after Pebble Beach, has been won by not one but two Duesenbergs. The Best in Show Concours d’Elegance was won by the Duesenberg SJN Arlington Torpedo Sedan of Helen and Jack Nethercutt, founders of the famed Nethercutt Collection in California.

The Nethercutts, multiple Pebble Beach winners, hadn’t even been planning to enter the Duesenberg, because it was restored over 30 years ago, in 1979. The Best of Show Concours de Sport was won by Harry Yeaggy’s famed ‘Mormon Meteor’, the 1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster used by Ab Jenkins in his land speed recordbreaking at Bonneville.

Among the many other highlights of the Amelia Island Concours – this year thought to be the best attended yet – were a line-up of no fewer than 22 Allards, a 100 years of Indy display, a special display of BMW motorcycles, including the one-off R7 concept, ‘Cover Cars of Hot Rod magazine’ and a ‘Cars of Bobby Rahal’ class, with Rahal in attendance throughout the day,

Many other star drivers were at the concours, including Vic Elford, Brian Redman, David Hobbs, Hurley Haywood, Dan Gurney, Brock Yates, Johnny Rutherford and Don Prudhomme.

A full report will appear in the June issue of Octane magazine, on UK newsstands 27 April.
