Forty four years after John Surtees OBE made his debut at Reims for Cooper-Maserati, having left Ferrari and as leader of the World Championship, John Surtees has returned to Reims-Gueux to a rousing French and English welcome.
In his role as patron, Surtees joined competitors on The Beaujolais Run to award winning teams and at their black tie prize-giving dinner. It was at this Champagne Tattinger property that John announced competitors would have the chance to drive with him on the evocative Reims-Gueux road circuit; once home of the French Grand Prix.
Surtees’ return provided a spectacular close to the 2010 ‘Run which saw appearances by Nigel Mansell, Jonathan Palmer, Robbie Kerr and Anthony Reid. In celebration of 60 years of F1 competing teams lapped
Brands Hatch and Dijon-Prenois, as well as re-visiting the scene of John’s historic race after his “divorce” from Ferrari.
This year’s Run supported the Henry Surtees Foundation and saw contributions from Jean Alesi’s wine cellar, Jody Scheckter’s Laverstoke Farm and Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saison.
