The 38th AvD Oldtimer meeting at the Nürburgring enjoyed two days of reasonable weather with Saturday bright and sunny but Sunday was severely compromised by torrential rain and the Eifel mists. Amongst the celebrities and stars of yesteryear were Klaus Ludwig, Hans Stuck and 82 year old Hans Herrmann.
Friday's Marathon held on the fearsome Nordschleife combined with the modern F1 track provided the usual enormous grid. Over the years Gotcha Racing's familiar E-type driven by Marcus von Oeynhausen and this time Frank Stippler have been star performers but they had to give best this year to a very hot Ford Fairlane driven by identical twins 'Fred' and 'Barney' to finish 2nd. These two cars completed 20 laps with the Tice/Conoley Marcos 1800 GT a worthy 3rd beating the much fancied Schryver/Hadfield Lotus Elan 126R. A shorter 'Youngtimer' race preceded this using just the old circuit and was a Porsche fest, won by Daniel Schrey in a 911 RSR.
Saturday began with the ultra competitive Formula Junior race that was ultimately won by Urs Eberhardt's Lotus 27 but only after Edwin Josey's earlier Lotus 22 had led most of the race. These two were separated by just 0.347 sec, over 20 seconds clear of Tonetti's Brabham BT6. Next up were the Grand Prix Masters with Folch's Williams FW08 winning ahead of Steve Hartley's Arrows A4 and Rob Austin's Surtees TS19. The Williams was over a second per lap faster than the rest but the final laps held under the safety car were confusing with the lead drivers uncertain as to whether they could race or not whilst they trundled round in formation all on their own.
Race 3 for the Revival Deutsche Rennsportmeisterschaft was convincingly won by Klaus Ludwig's Porsche 935, still as fast as ever, from pole sitter Daniel Schrey in his 935 K3 followed by four other Porsches with Wagner's BMW M1 Procar the first interloper in 7th. Race 4 featured World Sportscar Masters aka 1970s sports/prototypes which was won by Martin Stretton in an Osella-Abarth Osella PA 1 from Steve Tandy's Lola Chevy T70 Mk3B and Benedini's Chevron B16 with Uli Schumacher's distinctive Porsche 908/3 in 4th. The grid also featured two more Porsche 908s, 910, 906 and 904 plus Chevron B8, GT40, a King Cobra (Cooper Monaco Ford V8) et al.
Tony Smith in his V12 Ferrari Dino was victorious in Saturday's Historic Grand Prix Cars up to 1960 race from Allan Miles' Maserati 250F and Rod Jolley's unique 'Monzanapolis' Lister Jaguar. Hubert Fabri's beautiful Aston Martin DBR4/250 was 4th ahead of Ian Nuthall's impressive Alta and Balz's 250F Maser. This was followed later by the 1960/61 sports car race held on Saturday night which was well won by Alan and Jason Minshaw in their 'Birdcage' Maserati from David Ham and son Simon in David's famous Lister. Alex Birkenstock's blaring Ferrari 196S finished 3rd. Willy Balz's pole position Camoradi 'Birdcage' streamliner finished 30th after losing 5 laps whilst the rapid Reedtz-Thott/Stretton Lotus 19 was even further back 8 laps adrift.
