Another fabulous day out for enthusiasts of Italian cars ranging from stock, concours and competition, to diminutive Fiat Topolino and 500 models. Rare and interesting cars such as Moretti, Triumph Italia 2000, and Abarth Simca made a showing, but there was also a large contingent of the more modern Ferrari and Lamborghini Supercars, encompassing a wide range of the most popular models. One of the most spirited drives of the day was by the Richardson brothers, who drove their father's 1931 Alfa Romeo 1750 Zagato Grand Sport down from Lincolnshire, requiring a 5:45am departure and a round trip of 300 miles! The car has been owned by Dennis, the father, for around 20 years and it has competed in the Mille Miglia on two occasions, back in 2000 and 2002.
Chris Lackner runs the ISO-Bizzarini Club, and drove his 1968 ISO Grifo to Brooklands. It’s one of only four RHD Grifos built, as well as being the 1968 London Motor Show car. Chris has owned the Grifo since 1987 during which time it underwent a restoration between 1990 – 1994. More recently it has been off the road to be repainted and have a five-speed transmission fitted, and was making its first outing for three years. Powered by a big block 7.5 litre Chevrolet engine that’s rated at 500bhp and 500 lb/ft torque Chris says it doesn’t matter how he drives his car, it always returns around 10mpg. 'It’s a bit of an old dinosaur really', he jests 'but right now it’s driving like a dream'. Other models on show from the ISO stable included the Fidia, Lele and Rivolta.
Dudley and Sally Mason-Styrron have recently returned from competing in the Tour Auto with their 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Group IV, an ex-Le Mans racer where it was entered in 1972 and 1973. In '72 it ran for Maranello Concessionaires and sported the current racing colours, and in 1973 ran for JCB when it was finished in yellow paintwork with red wheels. Jonathan Roots’ 1970 Apple Green De Tomaso Mangusta has recently been imported from Spoleto near Rome. It had one previous owner, Giancarlo Furiosi, a pilot who was also a personal friend of Alessandro De Tomaso. This car is another example of that mixed blend of Italian design flair with power courtesy of Detroit, in this case a 289ci HI PO small block Ford.
Other attractions of the day included owners of Italian cars being given the opportunity to have a sprint up the famous Brooklands Test Hill, trade stalls, and of course the opportunity to view the various exhibits of the Museum. Another splendid event delivering highlights of the best the Italian car scene has to offer in the UK.
