Report: Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance

Fun in the sun

The Ritz-Carlton once again groaned under the weight of the concours entrants - 2010 truly was a vintage year.

The Amelia Island Concours was held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Amelia Island on 14 March. Second only to Pebble Beach in the hierarchy of US Concours, but viewed by many as the one they most like to be invited to, Bill Warner, the Founder and Co-Chair once again delivered a field of cars that catered for the most cosmopolitan tastes.

Only at Amelia Island would you find classes for Forgotten Fibreglass and Cars You Never Knew Existed, alongside the more traditional classes such as Post War Sports and GT Cars, American Classic Open and Post War Rolls-Royce. At one point, lined up next to each other to collect their awards were a 1904 Cadillac horseless carriage, a Plymouth NASCAR, and a Leyat Helica propellor car.

The two best of Show Trophies were awarded to the stunning 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster owned by Sam and Emily Mann in the Concours d'Elegance category, and the 1960 Maserati Tipo 61 owned by Jonathan Feiber in the Concours de Sport category.

The latter car also won the Octane magazine award for the most historically significant car of the Cuban Grand Prix.

In total nearly 250 cars were presented on the show field, and with over 75 trophies awarded, a good proportion of the owners went home happy, although an unseasonal cold spell had the crowd shivering through the three hours of the awards presentation.

The Amelia Island Concours honored the very sprightly 72 year old Richard Petty. With 200 NASCAR victories to his credit, Petty is the undisputed King of stock car racing, and his trademark cowboy hat could be seen throughout the day as Petty obliged the many fans with his autograph.

The Amelia Island Concours is a very special event, with its own unique charm and character. There is no better place to be in March than on the Florida Coast enjoying the eclectic mix of cars that Bill Warner has pulled together on each of the last 15 years
